The City of Los Angeles once siphoned water from 4 out of the 5 creeks that flow into Mono Lake from the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. In 1994, the California State Water Resources Control Board mandated the lake level be set at 6,392 feet. This meant L.A. could no longer divert all the water from the creeks. Over the years following that decision, Mono Lake has risen to 6,383 feet--11 feet higher than its all-time low. Mono Lake\'s comeback is due to the dedicated action of caring citizens, and several organizations, most notably the Mono Lake Committee, which was founded in 1978 with the sole intention of saving Mono Lake from what looked like certain death.
